The Government of Bangladesh have been doing everything to protect the rights and safety of Bangladeshi migrants abroad -Md. Israfil Alam MP

The Government of Bangladesh will continue to promote safe, regular and orderly migration and have been doing everything to protect the rights and safety of Bangladeshi migrants abroad, said the Chair of Bangladesh Parliamentarians Caucus on Migration Mr. Md. Israfil Alam MP.
Today, the Bangladesh Parliamentarians Caucus on Migration along with the Civil Society members and NGO Committee on Migration held a consultative meeting in Permanent Mission of Bangladesh to the UN in New York. The Caucus participated in the 12th Global Forum on Migration and Development held in Quito, Ecuador.
Mentioning that Migration is an important development issue for Bangladesh, the MP said that remittance plays an important role in its economy and social development. He reiterated the Government’s commitment to promote safe, regular and orderly migration. He laid out different laws Government has put in place to promote migration and bring transparency in the system.
The Chair of the Caucus mentioned that GFMD is an effective forum to have dialogues among different actors in the field of migration. He emphasized on its being more inclusive so that it can play a more proactive role in promoting safe, regular and orderly migration. He informed that Bangladesh delegation in the GFMD highlighted the issues of forced movement of people and the plight of the undocumented migrants. He also opined that the governments, Caucus, CSOs should highlight the migration related issues during the High-Level Political Forum of the UN to be held in July this year.
H.E. PR of Bangladesh to the UN in New York Ms. Rabab Fatima welcomed the Parliamentarian Caucus, representatives of the Civil Society Organizations and the members of the NGO Committee and mentioned that the creation of the Caucus is the reflection of the importance Bangladesh attaches to the issue of migration. Mentioning the continued relevance of the GFMD in addressing the challenges of migration, the PR observed that it provides a platform for bridge making between the policy makers and the CSOs. She also stated that GFMD can take forward the implementation of the Global Compact on Migration which is a milestone document to protect the rights of migrants.
Ms. Mahjabeen Kahlid, Ex MP- Member, Parliamentarians Caucus, Mr. Syed Saiful Haque, Chairman, WARBE (Welfare Association for the Rights of Bangladesh Emigrants) Development Foundation, Mr. Gerry Fox, Team Leader, British Council PROKAS (Promoting Knowledge for Accountable Systems) Project, Ms. Shirin Lira, IBP Manager and Gender & Social Inclusion Adviser, British Council PROKAS Project. Members of the NGO Committee on Migration Ms. Eva Richter and Maria Pia Mignatti were also present during the meeting.
There was a lively discussion on various challenges of migration and how different existing processes could contribute to address them. The participants alluded to the issues of particular challenges faced by the women migrants, exploitation and abuses faced by the migrants and also migrants in crisis.
