International Mother Language Day (IMLD) 2022 has been celebrated at the UN headquarters today for the 6th consecutive year. The Permanent Missions of Bangladesh, El Salvador, Nigeria, Portugal and Slovakia jointly organized the event in partnership with the UN Secretariat and UNESCO. The President of the General Assembly graced the event. In addition to that, special congratulatory messages were delivered from the Director General of UNESCO and the Mayor of New York City.
For the first time, the IMLD was celebrated with interpretation services in all six official languages of the United Nations, enabling the distinguished speakers deliver their remarks in their mother tongue. The theme song of the IMLD (amar bhai-er rokte rangano…) was presented by the students of Asian University for Women in Bangladesh in multiple languages. The event also featured cultural performances from Morocco, El Salvador, Slovakia and Portugal. The UN Secretariat and the Office of the President of General Assembly also shared multi-lingual video messages. The event was live telecast on the UN Web TV.
In her welcome remarks, the Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the UN Ambassador Rabab Fatima paid deep homage to the language martyrs for upholding the sanctity of Bangla in 1952, and to the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman for leading the language movement and the subsequent national movements culminating to our liberation in 1971. She recalled with gratitude the role of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in securing UNESCO’s recognition of 21st February as the international mother language day at the initiative of expatriate Bangladeshis and also in establishing the International Mother language Institute in Dhaka.
Referring to the devastating impact of COVID on education, Ambassador Fatima thanked UNESCO for choosing this year’s theme, Using technology for multilingual learning: challenges and opportunities. “Technology can play an instrumental role in advancing multilingual education. We need to mobilize all stakeholders to work together to restore the vitality of all languages, and invest in developing low-cost, user-friendly technologies that can support multilingual learning everywhere,” said the Ambassador.
The Permanent Representative of Costa Rica in his capacity of the Chair of the Group of Friends on Spanish language and Vice-Chair of the NGO Committee on Language and Languages also spoke at the event.
The President of the General Assembly and all the other speakers thanked Bangladesh for its leadership in promoting multilingualism and mother tongues in the UN. They all recognized the potential role technology can play in advancing education in mother languages and in this regard called for bridging the digital divide. Speaking in their respective mother tongues, the speakers highlighted the importance of preservation of languages that are at the verge of extinction.
Earlier in the morning the Permanent Mission of Bangladesh observed the Martyrs Day and the International Mother Language Day with due solemnity in the Mission’s premises with the participation of Mr. Md. Tazul Islam, Minister for Local Government and Rural Development and Secretary Mr. Helal Uddin Ahmed. The Permanent Representative and the mission officials led by the Minister laid floral wreath in the Shaheed Minar established in the mission. The Minister in his remarks thanked Bangladesh mission for organizing the event. Referring to the remarkable and inclusive socio-economic progress achieved by Bangladesh under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, he encouraged the mission officials to uphold Bangladesh image and protect its national interest in the international fora.
During the event the messages of the President, Prime Minister, Foreign Minister and State Minister for Foreign Affairs were delivered.

আজ জাতিসংঘ সদরদপ্তরে টানা ৬ষ্ঠ বারের মতো আন্তর্জাতিক মাতৃভাষা দিবস উদযাপন করা হয়। ২০১৭ সাল থেকে জাতিসংঘে আন্তর্জাতিক মাতৃভাষা দিবস উদযাপনের এ আয়োজনে নেতৃত্ব দিয়ে আসছে বাংলাদেশ। এবারেও জাতিসংঘে বাংলাদেশ স্থায়ী মিশনের সাথে যৌথ অংশীদারিত্বে ইভেন্টটির আয়োজন করে এলসালভাদর, নাইজেরিয়া, পর্তুগাল ও শ্লোভাকিয়া মিশন। এতে সহ-অংশীদারিত্ব করে জাতিসংঘ সচিবালয় ও ইউনেস্কো। জাতিসংঘ সদরদপ্তরে আয়োজিত আন্তর্জাতিক মাতৃভাষা দিবসের বিশেষ এই অনুষ্ঠানে অংশগ্রহণ করে জাতিসংঘ সাধারণ পরিষদের সভাপতি। এছাড়া অনুষ্ঠানটি উপলক্ষে শুভেচ্ছাবাণী প্রদান করেন ইউনেস্কোর মহাপরিচালক ও নিউইয়র্ক সিটির মেয়র।
অনুষ্ঠানের বক্তাগণ যাতে নিজ নিজ মাতৃভাষায় বক্তব্য রাখতে পারেন সেজন্য এই প্রথমবারের মতো জাতিসংঘের ছয়টি অফিশিয়াল ভাষায় গোটা অনুষ্ঠানটি অনুবাদের সুব্যবস্থা রাখা হয়। বাংলাদেশের এশিয়ান ইউনিভার্সিটি অব উইমেন এর শিক্ষার্থীদের পরিবেশনায় আন্তর্জাতিক মাতৃভাষা দিবসের থিম সঙ্গীত-‘আমার ভাইয়ের রক্তে রাঙানো একুশে ফেব্রুয়ারি..’ একাধিক ভাষায় উপস্থাপন করা হয়। অনুষ্ঠানটিতে মরক্কো, এলসালভেদর, শ্লোভাকিয়া ও পর্তুগালের সাংস্কৃতিক পরিবেশনাও ছিল মনোমুগ্ধকর। এছাড়া জাতিসংঘ সচিবালয় এবং জাতিসংঘ সাধারণ পরিষদ সভাপতির কার্যালয়ে কর্মরত কর্মকর্তাগণের স্ব স্ব ভাষায় রেকর্ডকৃত বহুভাষিক ভিডিও বার্তা পরিবেশন করা হয় অনুষ্ঠানটিতে। জাতিসংঘ ওয়েব টিভিতে অনুষ্ঠানটি সরাসরি সম্প্রচার করা হয়।
উদ্বোধনী বক্তব্যে জাতিসংঘে নিযুক্ত বাংলাদেশের স্থায়ী প্রতিনিধি রাষ্ট্রদূত রাবাব ফাতিমা ১৯৫২ সালের একুশে ফেব্রুয়ারির ভাষা শহীদগণ এবং ভাষা আন্দোলনের পথিকৃৎ জাতির পিতা বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবুর রহমানকে গভীর শ্রদ্ধার সাথে স্মরণ করেন। তিনি বলেন, ভাষা আন্দোলনের পথ ধরেই জাতির পিতার নেতৃত্বে শুরু হয় বাঙালি জাতির মুক্তিসংগ্রাম যার চুড়ান্ত পরিণতি পায় ১৯৭১ সালের মুক্তিযুদ্ধে আমাদের বিজয়ের মাধ্যমে। মহান ২১ শে ফেব্রুয়ারিকে আন্তর্জাতিক মার্তভাষা দিবস হিসেবে স্বীকৃতি লাভের জন্য প্রবাসী কয়েকজন বাংলাদেশীদের উদ্যোগকে রাষ্ট্রীয় উদ্যোগের মাধ্যমে এগিয়ে নিয়ে ইউনেস্কোর মাধ্যমে ‘আন্তর্জাতিক মাতৃভাষা দিবস’ এর পূর্ণ স্বীকৃতি আদায়ে প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনার দূরদর্শী নেতৃত্বের কথা স্মরণ করেন রাষ্ট্রদূত ফাতিমা। এছাড়া রাজধানী ঢাকায় আন্তর্জাতিক মাতৃভাষা ইনস্টিটিউট প্রতিষ্ঠার ক্ষেত্রে প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনার উদ্যোগ ও অবদানের কথাও স্মরণ করেন তিনি।
শিক্ষাক্ষেত্রে কোভিডের ভয়াবহ প্রভাবের কথা উল্লেখ করে এবছর আন্তর্জাতিক মাতৃভাষা দিবসের প্রতিপাদ্য -‘প্রযুক্তির ব্যবহারের মাধ্যমে বহুভাষায় জ্ঞানার্জন: সঙ্কট এবং সম্ভাবনা’ বেছে নেওয়ার জন্য ইউনেস্কোকে ধন্যবাদ জানান বাংলাদেশের স্থায়ী প্রতিনিধি। তিনি বলেন, “প্রযুক্তি বহুভাষিক শিক্ষার অগ্রগতিতে সহায়ক ভূমিকা পালন করতে পারে। সকল ভাষার প্রাণশক্তি ফিরে পেতে আমাদের সকল অংশীজনকে একসাথে কাজ করতে হবে; কম খরচে ব্যবহার-বান্ধব প্রযুক্তির বিকাশে বিনিয়োগ করতে হবে যা বহুভাষিক শিক্ষাকে সর্বত্র এগিয়ে নিতে পারে”।
স্প্যানিশ ভাষাভাষী ফ্রেন্ডস্ গ্রুপের সভাপতি হিসেবে জাতিসংঘে নিযুক্ত কোস্টারিকার স্থায়ী প্রতিনিধি এবং ভাষা বিষয়ক এনজিও কমিটির ভাইস-চেয়ারম্যান অনুষ্ঠানে বক্তব্য রাখেন।
সাধারণ পরিষদের সভাপতিসহ অন্যান্য বক্তাগণ জাতিসংঘে বহুভাষাবাদ ও মাতৃভাষার প্রচারে নেতৃত্ব দেওয়ার জন্য বাংলাদেশকে ধন্যবাদ জানান। মাতৃভাষার মাধ্যমে শিক্ষার অগ্রগতিতে প্রযুক্তির সম্ভাবনাময় ভূমিকা এবং প্রযুক্তিগত বিভাজন দূর করার কথা তুলে ধরেন তারা। নিজ নিজ মাতৃভাষায় কথা বলতে গিয়ে বক্তাগণ বিলুপ্তির পথে থাকা ভাষার সংরক্ষণের গুরুত্বও তুলে ধরেন।
জাতিসংঘ সদরদপ্তরে আন্তর্জাতিক মাতৃভাষা দিবস উদযাপন অনুষ্ঠানের আগে, সকালে, যথাযোগ্য মর্যাদায় জাতিসংঘে বাংলাদেশ স্থায়ী মিশনে মহান শহীদ দিবস ও আন্তর্জাতিক মাতৃভাষা দিবস উদযাপনের আয়োজন করা হয়। নিউইয়র্ক সফররত স্থানীয় সরকার, পল্লী উন্নয়ন ও সমবায় মন্ত্রী জনাব মো: তাজুল ইসলাম এমপি এবং একই মন্ত্রণালয়ের সিনিয়র সচিব জনাব হেলালুদ্দীন আহমদ এ অনুষ্ঠানে যোগ দেন। মন্ত্রীর নেতৃত্বে সিনিয়র সচিব ও জাতিসংঘে বাংলাদেশের স্থায়ী প্রতিনিধি এবং উপস্থিত মিশনের কর্মকর্তা ও মন্ত্রীর সফরসঙ্গীগণ মিশনে স্থাপিত অস্থায়ী শহীদ মিনারে পুষ্পস্তবক অর্পন করেন।
প্রদত্ত বক্তব্যে অনুষ্ঠানটি আয়োজনের জন্য বাংলাদেশ মিশনকে ধন্যবাদ জানান মন্ত্রী। তিনি ভাষা আন্দোলনের প্রেক্ষাপট, মাতৃভাষার গুরুত্ব, মাতৃভাষার মাধ্যমে জ্ঞানার্জনসহ প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনার নেতৃত্বে বাংলাদেশের অন্তর্ভূক্তিমূলক আর্থ-সামাজিক অগ্রগতি ও অদম্য অগ্রযাত্রার কথা তুলে ধরেন। মিশনে দায়িত্বরত কর্মকর্তাদের আন্তর্জাতিক মঞ্চে বাংলাদেশের ভাবমূর্তি এবং বাংলাদেশের জাতীয় স্বার্থ সমুন্নত রাখতে আরও নিবেদিত হয়ে কাজ করার আহ্বান জানান।
অনুষ্ঠানটিতে রাষ্ট্রপতি, প্রধানমন্ত্রী, পররাষ্ট্রমন্ত্রী ও পররাষ্ট্র প্রতিমন্ত্রীর বাণী পাঠ এবং মহান একুশের ভাষা শহীদদের আত্মার মাগফিরাত কামনা করে দোয়া করা হয়।
