I have the honour to deliver this statement on behalf of the Non-Aligned Movement.
NAM wishes to express its deepest appreciation to the co-facilitators, Ambassador Craig Hawke and Ambassador Rhonda King, for their leadership and successful steering of the intergovernmental consultations on the review of the peace-building architecture and presenting the draft resolution for adoption today.
We would also like to thank all delegations for their constructive engagement, flexibility and accommodation, which resulted in a consensus outcome of this important review exercise. My special thanks to all our experts for their sincere and tireless efforts in the entire process.
Mr. President,
NAM welcomes the adoption of the resolution. We are pleased to see the strong emphasis on the implementation of the peace-building resolutions, particularly at the field level, in support of the nationally determined peacebuilding priorities. In this regard, we very much welcome the reaffirmation of the principle of ‘national ownership’ in the text before us.
NAM appreciates that the resolution recognized the importance of full, equal and meaningful participation of women and youth in peacebuilding, as the review process coincided with the 20th anniversary of WPS and the 5th anniversary of YPS agenda.
We welcome the emphasis placed on the achievement of the sustainable development goals, especially the 5th anniversary of the General Assembly Resolution 70/1 and the decade of action on the SDGs, including the impact of Covid-19 pandemic on peacebuilding and development.
We also welcome the call for further strengthening the role and working method of the Peacebuilding Commission with a view to enhancing its efficiency and impact.
We consider the decision to convene a high-level meeting on peacebuilding financing in the seventy-sixth session of the General Assembly as one of the most notable achievements of the current review process. In this regard, NAM remains fully committed to actively engaging with all stakeholders in their efforts to achieve action-oriented outcomes.
In conclusion, I would like to reiterate NAM’s full commitment to peacebuilding and sustaining peace, with particular focus on national ownership, inclusivity and capacity-building of the national institutions. NAM stands ready to work with all concerned in this regard.
