Bangladesh has been unanimously elected as a member of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) for a four-year term, 2024-2028. The election was held today at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
Along with Bangladesh, Belgium, the Netherlands, Sri Lanka, Mali, Romania, Bolivia, Brazil and Colombia have also been elected to this body. “Bangladesh is the role model for gender equality and women empowerment. This election demonstrates the recognition of Bangladesh’s steadfast commitment to achieving gender equality, women’s rights and women’s empowerment” said Ambassador Muhammad Abdul Muhith, the Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the UN after the election.
Over the past decade, under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Bangladesh has made significant strides in reducing gender disparities in education, health, and political representation, and in increasing women’s access to economic opportunities. Bangladesh is committed to further advancing gender equality and women’s empowerment, and the election to the CSW will provide a platform to showcase its achievements and share best practices.
The CSW is the principal global intergovernmental body of the United Nations exclusively dedicated to promoting gender equality and empowerment of women and girls, comprising 45 members. Every year, during its two-week session, Member States, civil society and other stakeholders gather at United Nations Headquarters to evaluate progress in gender equality, identify challenges, set global standards and formulate concrete policies to promote gender equality and advancement of women worldwide.
It may be mentioned that Bangladesh was a member of this Commission from 2019 to 2023.

বাংলাদেশ সর্বসম্মতিক্রমে ২০২৪-২০২৮ মেয়াদের জন্য কমিশন অন দ্য স্ট্যাটাস অব উইমেন (সিএসডব্লিউ) এর সদস্য নির্বাচিত হয়েছে। আজ নিউইয়র্কে জাতিসংঘ সদর দপ্তরে এই নির্বাচন অনুষ্ঠিত হয়।
বাংলাদেশের পাশাপাশি বেলজিয়াম, নেদারল্যান্ডস, শ্রীলঙ্কা, মালি, রোমানিয়া, বলিভিয়া, ব্রাজিল ও কলম্বিয়াও এই সংস্থায় সদস্য হিসেবে নির্বাচিত হয়েছে। “বাংলাদেশ লিঙ্গ সমতা ও নারীর ক্ষমতায়নের রোল মডেল। এই নির্বাচন লিঙ্গ সমতা, নারীর অধিকার এবং ক্ষমতায়নে বাংলাদেশের অর্জনের স্বীকৃতি স্বরূপ”- নির্বাচনে জয়লাভের পর এক প্রতিক্রিয়ায় এমন কথা বলেন জাতিসংঘে নিযুক্ত বাংলাদেশের স্থায়ী প্রতিনিধি রাষ্ট্রদূত মোহাম্মাদ আব্দুল মুহিত।
বিগত এক দশকে বাংলাদেশ প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনার দূরদর্শী নেতৃত্বে শিক্ষা, স্বাস্থ্য এবং রাজনৈতিক প্রতিনিধিত্বে লিঙ্গ বৈষম্য হ্রাস এবং অর্থনৈতিক কর্মকাণ্ডে নারীর অংশগ্রহণ বৃদ্ধিতে উল্লেখযোগ্য অগ্রগতি সাধন করেছে। লিঙ্গ সমতা এবং নারীর ক্ষমতায়ন কর্মসূচিকে আরও এগিয়ে নিতে প্রতিশ্রুতিবদ্ধ বাংলাদেশ । কমিশন অন দ্য স্ট্যাটাস অব উইমেন এর সদস্য হিসেবে নির্বাচন বিশ্বব্যাপী লিঙ্গ সমতা এবং নারীর ক্ষমতায়নে বাংলাদেশের অর্জন তুলে ধরা এবং অন্যান্য সদস্য রাষ্ট্রের সাথে আমাদের সর্বোত্তম অনুশীলনগুলি ভাগ করার নিমিত্ব একটি অনবদ্য প্ল্যাটফর্ম প্রদান করবে।
৪৫ টি সদস্য নিয়ে গঠিত কমিশন অন দ্য স্ট্যাটাস অব উইমেন হল জাতিসংঘের প্রধান বৈশ্বিক আন্তঃসরকারি সংস্থা যা লিঙ্গ সমতা এবং নারীর ক্ষমতায়নের জন্য বিশেষভাবে কাজ করে থাকে।
প্রতি বছর জাতিসংঘ সদর দপ্তরে এই অঙ্গসংস্থাটির একটি দুই সপ্তাহব্যাপী অধিবেশন অনুষ্ঠিত হয়। এ সময় এর সদস্য রাষ্ট্র, সুশীল সমাজ এবং অন্যান্য অংশীজনরা বিশ্বব্যাপী লিঙ্গ সমতা অর্জনের অগ্রগতি মূল্যায়ন, এক্ষেত্রে বিদ্যমান চ্যালেঞ্জগুলি চিহ্নিতকরণ, বৈশ্বিক মান নির্ধারণ এবং বিশ্বব্যাপী লিঙ্গ সমতা এবং নারীর ক্ষমতায়নে সুনির্দিষ্ট নীতিমালা প্রণয়নের জন্য একত্রে মিলিত হয়।
উল্লেখ্য, এর পূর্বে বাংলাদেশ ২০১৯-২০২৩ মেয়াদে এই কমিশনের সদস্য হিসেবে কাজ করেছে।
