On 20th May 2022, a U.S. Army War College delegation comprising of 18 members led by Professor Douglas Waters visited the Permanent Mission of Bangladesh to the United Nations. The U.S. Army War College has been visiting Bangladesh Mission every year in recent times to learn about our experiences in the field of peace operation. This partnership comes as a recognition of Bangladesh’s remarkable contribution to UN peace operations and the reputation and professionalism of Bangladeshi peacekeepers. A senior officer of Bangladesh Army undergoing training in the War College was a part of this delegation.
Deputy Permanent Representative (DPR) of the Permanent Mission of Bangladesh to the UN, Dr. Md Monwar Hossain, welcomed the delegation to the mission. In his welcome address, the DPR focused on Bangladesh’s important contribution to UN peacekeeping operations as the topmost troops and police-contributing country and discussed about Bangladesh’s engagements in maintaining international peace & security, sustaining peace and peacebuilding discourses at the UN. The DPR highlighted the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the graduation of Bangladesh from the LDC category. He also mentioned Bangladesh’s leadership in adopting two resolutions titled `Culture of Peace’ and `Women, Peace and Security’ at the United Nations. In his speech, he stated that Bangladesh is now serving as the chair of the Peace Building Commission, the President of the UN Women Executive Board, the Chair of the Climate Vulnerable Forum, the Vice President of the General Assembly, and the Vice President of UNDP, UNFPA, and UNOPS. The DPR also recognized that the multidimensional cooperation between the militaries of Bangladesh and the United States is increasing day by day.
Defense Advisor (DA) of Bangladesh Permanent Mission Brigadier General Md Sadequzzaman briefed the delegation about Bangladesh’s engagement in the UN peacekeeping operations and the dedicated role played by the Bangladeshi peacekeepers. He said, “Bangladesh was always at the forefront of United Nations peacekeeping operations. So far, 1,80,661 Bangladeshi peacekeepers have participated in 54 UN peacekeeping missions. Currently, there are 6802 Bangladeshi peacekeepers deployed in 09 different missions. As many as 160 peacekeepers lost their lives in the line of duty while 240 have been injured”. The DA also mentioned that there are currently 387 women peacekeepers deployed in the peacekeeping missions. At present, Bangladesh Police has a female Formed Police Unit (FPU) in the mission. He also portrayed Bangladesh’s success stories in bringing peace to various war-ravaged parts of the world for more than three decades.
The US Army War College delegation applauded the Bangladesh Mission for the valuable exchange of information, excellent arrangement, and warm hospitality. The Deputy Permanent Representative thanked the U.S. Army War College delegation for choosing Bangladesh Permanent Mission for their visit.

গত ২০ মে ২০২২ প্রফেসর ডগলাস ওয়াটারস্ (Douglas Waters) এর নেতৃত্বে যুক্তরাষ্ট্র আর্মি ওয়ার কলেজের ১৮ সদস্যের একটি প্রতিনিধিদল জাতিসংঘে বাংলাদেশ স্থায়ী মিশন পরিদর্শন করেন। জাতিসংঘ শান্তিরক্ষা কার্যক্রমে বাংলাদেশের অব্যাহত অগ্রযাত্রা এবং বাংলাদেশী শান্তিরক্ষীদের সুনামের প্রেক্ষিতে পারস্পরিক অভিজ্ঞতা বিনিময়ের অংশ হিসেবে প্রতিবছরই ইউএস আর্মি ওয়ার কলেজের প্রতিনিধিদল বাংলাদেশ মিশন পরিদর্শনে আসেন। ১৮ সদস্যের এই ডেলিগেশনে ঐ কলেজে প্রশিক্ষণরত বাংলাদেশ সেনাবাহিনীর একজন উচ্চপদস্থ কর্মকর্তাও রয়েছেন।
আর্মি ওয়ার কলেজের প্রতিনিধিদলকে মিশনে স্বাগত জানান জাতিসংঘে বাংলাদেশের উপ-স্থায়ী প্রতিনিধি ড. মো: মনোয়ার হোসেন। স্বাগত বক্তব্যে তিনি শীর্ষ শান্তিরক্ষী প্রেরণকারী দেশ হিসেবে জাতিসংঘের শান্তিরক্ষা কার্যক্রমে বাংলাদেশের ব্যাপক অবদান এবং জাতিসংঘের শান্তি ও নিরাপত্তা রক্ষা, টেকসই শান্তি ও পিস্বিল্ডিং কার্যক্রমে বাংলাদেশের নিবিড় অংশগ্রহণের কথা তুলে ধরেন। এলডিসি ক্যাটেগরি থেকে বাংলাদেশের উত্তরণে প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনার দূরদর্শী নেতৃত্বের কথা তুলে ধরেন উপ-স্থায়ী প্রতিনিধি। জাতিসংঘে ‘শান্তির সংস্কৃতি’ এবং ‘নারী, শান্তি ও নিরাপত্তা’ শীর্ষক রেজুলেশন দুটি গৃহীত হওয়ার ক্ষেত্রে বাংলাদেশের নেতৃত্বের কথাও উল্লেখ করেন তিনি। প্রদত্ত বক্তব্যে তিনি জানান পিস্বিল্ডিং কমিশনের চেয়ার, ইউএন উইমেন এক্সিকিউটিভ বোর্ডের প্রেসিডেন্ট, ক্লাইমেট ভালনারেবল ফোরামের চেয়ার, সাধারণ পরিষদের ভাইস প্রেসিডেন্ট, এবং ইউএনডিপি, ইউএনএফপিএ ও ইউএনওপিএস এর ভাইস প্রেসিডেন্ট হিসেবে দায়িত্ব পালন করছে বাংলাদেশ। বাংলাদেশ ও যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের সামরিক বাহিনীর মধ্যে বহুমূখী সহযোগিতা দিন দিন আরও বৃদ্ধি পাচ্ছে মর্মে তিনি তাঁর স্বাগত ভাষণে উল্লেখ করেন।
বাংলাদেশ স্থায়ী মিশনের ডিফেন্স অ্যাডভাইজর ব্রিগেডিয়ার জেনারেল মো: ছাদেকুজ্জামান জাতিসংঘ শান্তিরক্ষা কার্যক্রমে বাংলাদেশের শান্তিরক্ষীদের ভূমিকা ও বিভিন্ন পদক্ষেপের কথা তুলে ধরেন। তিনি বলেন, “জাতিসংঘ শান্তিরক্ষা কার্যক্রমে বাংলাদেশ সর্বোচ্চ শান্তিরক্ষী প্রেরণকারী দেশ। এ পর্যন্ত বাংলাদেশের ১ লাখ ৮০ হাজার ৬৬১ জন শান্তিরক্ষী জাতিসংঘের ৫৪টি পিস কিপিং মিশনে অংশ নিয়েছেন। আর বর্তমানে ০৯ টি মিশনে নিয়োজিত রয়েছেন ৬ হাজার ৮০২ জন বাংলাদেশী শান্তিরক্ষী। দায়িত্ব পালনরত অবস্থায় এ পর্যন্ত শহীদ হয়েছেন ১৬০ জন আর আহত হয়েছেন ২৪০ জন”। এছাড়া তিনি জানান, শান্তিরক্ষী মিশনে বর্তমানে ৩৮৭ জন নারী শান্তিরক্ষী রয়েছেন যার মধ্যে বাংলাদেশ পুলিশের একটি নারী কন্টিনজেন্ট রয়েছে। প্রদত্ত বক্তব্যে বিগত তিন দশকেরও বেশি সময়ে জাতিসংঘ শান্তিরক্ষা কার্যক্রমে বাংলাদেশের সাফল্যমন্ডিত অগ্রযাত্রার বিভিন্ন দিকগুলোর কথা তুলে ধরেন ডিফেন্স অ্যাডভাইজর।
তথ্য-সমৃদ্ধ এই চমৎকার আয়োজন ও আতিথেয়তার জন্য ইউএস আর্মি ওয়ার কলেজের প্রতিনিধিদল বাংলাদেশ মিশনকে ধন্যবাদ জানান। পরিদর্শনের জন্য বাংলাদেশ মিশনকে নির্বাচিত করায় মিশনের উপ-স্থায়ী প্রতিনিধি ইউএস আর্মি ওয়ার কলেজের প্রতিনিধিদলকেও ধন্যবাদ জানান।
