Secretary-General (SG) António Guterres reaffirmed UN’s continued support to Bangladesh in overcoming unprecedented challenges that may arise out of the ongoing global conflicts,financial, energy and food crisis andthe adverse impact of climate change. He made this comment while meeting the Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dr. A.K. Abdul Momen, M.P. today at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. In this context, the Foreign Minister applauded the Black Sea Grain initiative that helped countries in need to import fertilizer and cereal to tackle their food crisis. Mr. Guterres informed that some European Countries namely Latvia, Estonia, Belgium and Netherlands have adequate stockpile of raw materials of fertilizerthat Bangladesh mayconsider to import at an affordable price. Thanking Secretary-General, the Foreign Minister assured that Bangladesh will explore the possibility to seize this opportunity.
Appreciating Bangladesh’s extra-ordinary development trajectory under the visionary leadership of the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, SG wished that Bangladesh would continue to achieve more successes in the coming years, particularity in attaining the SDGs. SG also admired the continuous leadership of Bangladesh in maintaining the international peace and security as the top troops and police contributing country to the United Nations peacekeeping operation.
They also discussed the Rohingya crisis and its possible way out in view of the recently adopted Security Council’s Resolution on Myanmar. They underscored the importance of ASEAN’s leadership in resolving the crisis. On this note, the Secretary General highly appreciated Bangladesh’s generosity for sheltering 1.2 million Rohingyas and reiterated UN’s support for returning the forcibly displaced Rohingyas to their homeland in Myanmar.
Earlier, the Foreign Minister held meetings with Csaba Kőrösi, the President of the General Assembly (PGA), Rosemary DiCarlo, Under-Secretary General for Department of Peacebuilding and Political Affairs (DPPA) and Jean-Pierre Lacroix, Under-Secretary-General for Department of Peace Operations (DPO).
During his Meeting with the PGA, they discussed a wide range of issues particularly the proposal of Bangladesh for the establishment of a Ministerial Forum on South-South Cooperation. Thanking the Foreign Minister for the above initiative, the PGA commended Bangladesh’s remarkable leadership, productive engagement and significant contribution in recent time in various processes of the United Nations and expressed his commitment to work together.
During his Meeting with Under-Secretary General for DPPA, USG appreciated the important role played by Bangladesh during its Chairmanship of the United Nations Peacebuilding Commission (PBC) for 2022. While meeting with Under-Secretary-General for Department of Peace Operations, USG praised the recently concluded bilateral agreement between Bangladesh and Gambia for joint deployment of peacekeepers in future UN Missions. He assured that his department will promote such initiative where other countries can benefit from Bangladesh’s long-experience in peacekeeping operation. Against this backdrop, Dr. Momen reiterated Bangladesh’s continuous commitment to UN Peacekeeping Operation and its readiness to provide more peacekeepers and equipment as and when necessary.
Among others, Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the UN in New York Ambassador Muhammad Abdul Muhith was present at those meetings.

জাতিসংঘ মহাসচিব আন্তোনিও গুতেরেস চলমান বৈশ্বিক সংঘাত, আর্থিক, জ্বালানি ও খাদ্য সংকট এবং জলবায়ু পরিবর্তনের বিরূপ প্রভাবের কারণে উদ্ভূত চ্যালেঞ্জসমূহ মোকাবিলায় বাংলাদেশের প্রতি জাতিসংঘের অব্যাহত সমর্থন পুনর্ব্যক্ত করেছেন। আজ নিউইয়র্কে জাতিসংঘ সদর দপ্তরে বাংলাদেশের পররাষ্ট্রমন্ত্রী ড. এ. কে. আব্দুল মোমেন এম.পি.-এর সঙ্গে সাক্ষাৎকালে তিনি এমন মন্তব্য করেন। এই প্রেক্ষাপটে, পররাষ্ট্রমন্ত্রী ব্ল্যাক সি গ্রেইন উদ্যোগকে সাধুবাদ জানান যা বিশ্বের বিভিন্ন দেশকে সার ও শস্য আমদানির মাধ্যমে তাদের খাদ্য সংকট মোকাবেলায় সহায়তা করে। মিঃ গুতেরেস জানান যে, লাটভিয়া, এস্তোনিয়া, বেলজিয়াম এবং নেদারল্যান্ডসে সারের কাঁচামালের পর্যাপ্ত মজুদ রয়েছে যা বাংলাদেশ সাশ্রয়ী মূল্যে আমদানির কথা বিবেচনা করতে পারে। মহাসচিবকে ধন্যবাদ জানিয়ে পররাষ্ট্রমন্ত্রী আশ্বস্ত করেন যে, বাংলাদেশ এই সুযোগ কাজে লাগানোর কথা বিবেচনা করবে।
প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনার দূরদর্শী নেতৃত্বে বাংলাদেশের অসাধারন উন্নয়নের গতিধারার প্রশংসা করে মহাসচিব কামনা করেন যে, বাংলাদেশ আগামী বছরগুলোতে বিশেষ করে এসডিজি অর্জনে আরও সাফল্য অর্জন করবে। জাতিসংঘ শান্তিরক্ষা কার্যক্রমে শীর্ষ সেনা ও পুলিশ সদস্য প্রেরণকারী দেশ হিসেবে আন্তর্জাতিক শান্তি ও নিরাপত্তা রক্ষায় বাংলাদেশের ধারাবাহিক নেতৃত্বেরও প্রশংসা করেন তিনি।
সম্প্রতি জাতিসংঘ নিরাপত্তা পরিষদে মিয়ানমারের ওপর গৃহীত রেজুল্যুশনের পরিপ্রেক্ষিতে রোহিঙ্গা সংকট এবং এর সম্ভাব্য উত্তরণের উপায় নিয়েও আলোচনা করেন পররাষ্ট্রমন্ত্রী এবং মহাসচিব। তারা এই সংকট সমাধানে আসিয়ানের কার্যকর নেতৃত্বের ওপর গুরুত্বারোপ করেন। এই প্রেক্ষিতে মহাসচিব ১.২ মিলিয়ন রোহিঙ্গাকে আশ্রয় দেওয়ার জন্য বাংলাদেশের উদারতার ভূয়সী প্রশংসা করেন এবং মিয়ানমারে জোরপূর্বক বাস্তুচ্যুত রোহিঙ্গাদের তাদের মাতৃভূমি মিয়ানমারে ফেরাতে জাতিসংঘের সমর্থন পুনর্ব্যক্ত করেন।
মহাসচিবের সাথে সাক্ষাতের আগে পররাষ্ট্রমন্ত্রী সাধারণ পরিষদের সভাপতি সাবা কোরেসি (Csaba Kőrösi) ডিপার্টমেন্ট অফ পিসবিল্ডিং অ্যান্ড পলিটিক্যাল অ্যাফেয়ার্স (ডিপিপিএ)-এর আন্ডার সেক্রেটারি জেনারেল রোজমেরি ডিকার্লো (Rosemary DiCarlo) এবং পিস অপারেশন বিভাগের আন্ডার সেক্রেটারি জেনারেল জ্যঁপিয়েরে ল্যাক্রুয়া (Jean-Pierre Lacroix) সাথেও বৈঠক করেন।
সাধারণ পরিষদের সভাপতির সাথে বৈঠকের সময় পররাষ্ট্রমন্ত্রী স্বার্থ-সংশ্লিষ্ট বিভিন্ন বিষয় নিয়ে আলোচনা করেন। বিশেষভাবে তিনি সভাপতির সাথে সাউথ-সাউথ কোঅপারেশন বিষয়ে বাংলাদেশ কর্তৃক একটি মন্ত্রী পর্যায়ের নতুন ফোরাম প্রতিষ্ঠার প্রস্তাব নিয়ে আলোচনা করেন। উপরোক্ত উদ্যোগের জন্য পররাষ্ট্রমন্ত্রীকে ধন্যবাদ জানিয়ে সভাপতি সাম্প্রতিক সময়ে জাতিসংঘের বিভিন্ন প্রক্রিয়ায় বাংলাদেশের অসাধারণ নেতৃত্ব, কার্যকর সম্পৃক্ততা এবং উল্লেখযোগ্য অবদানের প্রশংসা করেন এবং বাংলাদেশের সঙ্গে একসঙ্গে কাজ করার অঙ্গীকার ব্যক্ত করেন।
ডিপার্টমেন্ট অফ পিসবিল্ডিং অ্যান্ড পলিটিক্যাল অ্যাফেয়ার্স (ডিপিপিএ)-এর আন্ডার সেক্রেটারি জেনারেলের সাথে বৈঠকে বাংলাদেশ জাতিসংঘের শান্তি বিনির্মাণ কমিশনে (পিবিসি) চেয়ারম্যান থাকাকালীন ২০২২ সালের বাংলাদেশের গরুত্বপূর্ণ ভূমিকার গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ভূমিকার প্রশংসা করেন আন্ডার সেক্রেটারি জেনারেল। পিস অপারেশন বিভাগের আন্ডার সেক্রেটারি জেনারেলের সাথে সাক্ষাতের সময় আন্ডার সেক্রেটারি জেনারেল ভবিষ্যতে জাতিসংঘের পিসকিপিং মিশনসমূহে যৌথ উদ্যোগে শান্তিরক্ষী মোতায়েনের জন্য সম্প্রতি বাংলাদেশ ও গাম্বিয়ার মধ্যে সমাপ্ত দ্বিপাক্ষিক চুক্তিকে স্বাগত জানান। তিনি আশ্বস্ত করেন যে, তার বিভাগ এমন উদ্যোগকে উৎসাহিত করবে যাতে শান্তিরক্ষা কার্যক্রমে বাংলাদেশের দীর্ঘ অভিজ্ঞতা থেকে অন্যান্য দেশ উপকৃত হতে পারে। এই প্রেক্ষাপটে, ড. মোমেন জাতিসংঘ শান্তিরক্ষা অপারেশনে বাংলাদেশের অব্যাহত প্রতিশ্রুতি এবং প্রয়োজনে আরও শান্তিরক্ষী ও সরঞ্জাম সরবরাহের জন্য তার প্রস্তুতির কথা পুনর্ব্যক্ত করেন।
উপরোল্লিখিত বৈঠকসমূহ পররাষ্ট্রমন্ত্রীর সাথে জাতিসংঘে নিযুক্ত বাংলাদেশের স্থায়ী প্রতিনিধি রাষ্ট্রদূত মোহাম্মদ আব্দুল মুহিত উপস্থিত ছিলেন ।
